Susan E. Blow

(1843-1916)

Born June 7, 1843, in Carondelet, Missouri. (St. Louis) She received her kindergarten training from Maria Boelte in 1872 in New York. In 1873 she opened the first public school kindergarten in her Missouri home, which was soon moved to a new building. The Des Peres kindergarten was in operation until 1935. The adoption of the kindergarten by the St. Louis public schools contributed greatly to the spread of the U.S. kindergarten movement.
Beginning in 1894, she wrote five books for the International Education Series, edited by former St. Louis public schools superintendant William T. Harris, and was a lecturer at Teachers College, Columbia University. She wrote articles for the Kindergarten Magazine, travelled and lectured in defence of Froebel's teachings, served on the advisory committee of the International Kindergarten Union and the Committe of Nineteen.
